NORFC Green 18 - 5 Gainesville

NORFC Green (B) wins the USARS D3 championship

It was another hot morning in Little Rock as the NORFC D3 Green side faced Gainesville for the South Championship. It was a hard fought, all-team battle that ended with New Orleans winning its first D3 South Championship to go along with Gold's South Championship.

Play started in a familiar pattern with the large Gainesville pack keeping the ball tight and New Orleans determined to play its wide, fast game.

Gainesville mounted the first red zone attack, but Green's goal line defense won out and eventually we stole the ball to kick it out of dodge.

By the 10 minute mark we were forced into another goal line stand, repelling mauls and eventually picking up penalties to kick it away for breathing room.

Thus far Gainesville had been keeping possession more effectively and soon a penalty against Green gave them a kick attempt which missed.

More penalties kept Gainesville in our red zone, but our determined defense and good poaching kept them reversing the momentum.

Then, at the 20-minute mark, after a series of punches congested the Gainesville defense, Buck got the ball wide and when it found Brad who rocketed about 50 meters down the pitch, faking defenders to score under the uprights. The conversion was good. Green 7-0.

Green soon made another huge break, this time with Corey shredding defenders for a 30 meter run with an offload to Brad, brought us to their five meter line. After a prolonged battering failed to break through Green took a penalty kick opportunity to add 3 points. 10-0.

Gainesville was soon attacking yet again deep in Green territory, and yet again New Orleans defense was able to blunt their mauls and standup their runners until we could steal their ball.

The half ended with Green up 10-0.

Immediately from the restart Green starter feeding them more of the same, with runners breaking their line and good fast ball. Gainesville was good in defense too.

Play developed into a kicking duel that ended with a 5 meter scrum by the Gainesville goal, which led to a line out by the 20 and another determined Green run on the try line that Gainesville fought back.

But thanks to good steals New Orleans was again threatening and took a penalty to add three more points to the board. 13-0

More hard play and Gainesville was back in New Orleans territory where they pulled off an up-and-under to score in the very deep try zone. A missed kick made it 13-5 with about 20 minutes to go.

But, from the next restart, New Orleans surged back with a vengeance, weaving it back and across the pitch with phase after phase. The backs took it wide and when Barlow was tackled inside the 5 meter line, fresh sub Baby Lowe was there to snatch it up for a diving try between disorganized defenders. No conversion, 18-5

Gainesville threatened again and again defense, smart kicking and Gainesville penalties at key moments kept the momentum with New Orleans.

And that's how things would end, as subs poured on to seal the deal. The last run of the game went to Ish, making his post season debut.

New Orleans now has a double championship, tops in the South in D1 and D3.
